Hinting at another presidential run in 2016,
67-year-old Mitt Romney ripped former First Lady, U.S. Senator and, most
recently, Secretary of State today on CBS’ “Face the Nation.” Romney still has unfinished business
since getting flogged by Obama in 2012, more related to the GOP’s Tea Party and
evangelicals that couldn’t rap their heads around backing a Mormon. Actually, if Romney ran against
Obama today, all bets are off with Obama’s relatively low approval ratings now
hovering around 42%. For comparison
sakes, Bush left office in 2009 under 30%.
Romney jumped all over Hillary’s recent remarks at a Costco book signing,
saying that recently released Taliban prisoners swapped for 28-year-old Army
Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl posed no real threat to the United States. Telling Bob Schieffer that Hillary
“repeatedly underestimated” U.S. enemies on the world stage.
Swiping at Hillary, Romney hopes to show GOP faithful that he’s worthy of
another shot at White House, though there’s plenty of other GOP hopefuls
planning to seek the nomination.
“This administration, from Secretary Clinton to President Obama, has repeatedly
underestimated the threat that are faced by America,” Romney told Schieffer,
criticizing Hillary on everything from Benghazi, Syria and most recently
Ukraine. Romney needs to remember
Hillary retired from Secretary of State Feb. 1, 2013, before much of the hubbub
over Ukraine. Romney also needs to
note that Hillary, while Secretary of State, agreed with Sen. John McCain
(R-Ariz.) to start bombing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, something that
President Barack Obama—not Hillary— refused to do. So far, Obama’s approach has proved
more prudent, keeping the U.S. military away from another Mideast civil war.
Sitting in an armchair, it’s easy for Romney to take shots at Obama and
Hillary, especially now that Hillary new book “Hard Choices” came out. “It has repeatedly underestimated
our adversaries. And whether that’s
Russia or [Syrian President Bashar] Assd or ISIS or al-Qaida itself, it has not
take the action necessary to prevent things from happenin. We have no used our influence to do what’s necessary to protect our interests,” insisted
Romney, knowing that under Obama the U.S. refuses to play world policeman. When Romney speaks of U.S.
“influence,” he’s referring to projecting more military power into dangerous
regions like Syria or Ukraine. Even
McCain admitted there was no military option in Ukraine. Romney knows that the U.S. supports
ISIS in Syria but not in Iraq where a Saudi-backed Sunni insurgency works 24/7
to topple the Shiite government of U.S.-backed Nouri al-Maliki.
Romney went off the rails calling Hillary “clueless” for suggesting that
the five senior Taliban Guantanamo Bay prisoners swapped for Bergdahl posed no
real threat to the U.S. Obama’s
decision to swap out the Taliban prisoners was on the advice of Gen. Martin
Dempsey, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Because the U.S. was ending its involvement in Afghanistan at year’s end,
he thought the time was right to get the lone U.S. hostage out. Romney doesn’t get that Obama also
promised during his 2008 against McCain to close down Guantanamo Bay. Releasing five senior Taliban
detainees to get out Bergdah was, as Hillary puts it, “Hard Choices.” Whatever Bergdahl did or didn’t do
get captured, he deserved to get rescued as any POW. Romney recalls that the Taliban
wasn’t responsible for Sept. 11, despite harboring Bin Laden and giving him safe
passage through Khyber Pass to Pakistan in Dec. 2001.
Romney hopes to win the backing of his GOP friends to another run at the
presidency. Hillary’s right when
she says that recently released senior Taliban prisoners don’t pose any real
threat to the U.S. “Look, these
commandos don’s represent a threat to the United states,” said Hillary at her
Costco book signing. “Well, of
course they do. And then she said.” “The only represent a threat to
Afghanistan and Pakistan,” Hillary said.
“Are you kidding? I mean we’re in Afghanistan. And we’re in Afghanistan in part to
protect American security,” said Romney, making no sense. Former President George W. Bush,
Vice President Dick Cheney and his national security team knew Bin Laden fled
Aftghanistan in Dec. 2001. Whether you like or hate the Taliban, they had nothing to do with Sept. 11. Suggesting that releasing five
older, beaten down detainees threatens U.S. national security is absurd.
Romney believes the GOP’s way going forward is to present bogus arguments
about Barack and Hillary’s foreign policy.
Telling folks that releasing Taliban prisoners threatens national
security lacks any factual proof.
“I think her clueless comments about the Bergdahl exchange as well as her record
as secretary of state are really going to be the foundation of how a Republican
candidate is able to take back the White House,” said Romney, proving that he’s
the clueless one. Romney lost in
2013 in part because he kept saying that Obama’s economy was failing when it was
getting better—and everyone knew it.
Now he wants his Party to focus on extraneous issues, like the Bergdahl
prisoner swap. If he really wanted
to help the GOP, he tell them to do something about immigration reform,
improving Obamacare and protecting entitlements like federal aid to education,
Medicare and Social Security.
